Ability to Balance on One Leg is a Sign of a Healthy Brain

May 12th, 2015

Stroke can cause a lot of deadly after effects to its victims. This is the reason why people are doing plenty of exercises and eating healthy food to avoid it. They are also always on the lookout for signs that warn of a possible stroke.

As it turns out, there is no reason to waste time visiting health websites to look for the signs anymore. Scientists have invented a simple test that will enable people to know whether they are possible victims of stroke. The test involves balancing on one leg for 20 seconds.

The test was devised by a team of Japanese scientists. It is based on the fact that the ability to maintain balance, is tied to the brain’s ability to function properly. If you are only able to balance for less than 20 seconds, then it is advisable to go for a medical checkup, off course unless there is another cause for the lack of balance.

1,300 men and women, about 67 years of age, participated in the research. They were asked to stand on one leg for 20 seconds and later went through brain health testing. The results were then published by the American Heart Association.

The outcome was surprising to the folks at Skout. Over 30% of those who had trouble standing on one leg for the twenty seconds tested positive for either cerebral small vessel disease or minute hemorrhages and sometimes both.
