Changes in the NBA

August 19th, 2015

The NBA has changed a whole lot over the years. I have been a big fan of the game, and I have seen a lot in management changing as players go from one team to another. There have been some bittersweet moments like seeing LeBron leave Cleveland, but he returned. I hated to see Jordan retire, but he would return in a leadership role as a team owner. That is the way that the NBA works. People leave, but somehow they return to roles and become more refined in the new roles that they hold.

Bruce Levenson, for example, has sold his beloved Atlanta Hawks team to Grant Hill. For years Grant played in the NBA, but now he has managed to transition back into a leadership role. He was doing some sports casting, but now he will have ownership of a team. Bruce held on to the team for years because he loved the game of basketball, but he saw the opportunity to release the team over to someone that could push it forward. It is not to say that he not may return to an ownership role in some time during the future. He just decided that now was the time to let go and let someone else see what they could do with this team.

It is a perfect fit for Grant Hill. He lives in Orlando with his wife Tamia so it doesn’t take long to get to the neighboring state of Georgia. It may be a better fit for the Hawks since Hill has experience as a player in the NBA. For many years Bruce Levenson has invested in the things that he loves. Levenson loves gold and tennis, but basketball has been one of his biggest passions. He has no professional history in playing the sport, but he represents men that like to invest in what they are passionate about.

Jay-Z has never been a basketball star. Shawn Carter is known as Jay-Z because he is an entertainer. He has a passion for basketball though, and this has led him to become an owner of the NBA team the Brooklyn Nets. This was an expensive proposition because this team was originally the New Jersey Nets. In time he would move the team to his Brooklyn homeland area and start a new era in basketball. At times it takes someone new to build up excitement about a team. New leadership can wow fans and give people a reason to come to games. Sometimes the players are the stars. At other times it is the leaders behind the teams that have the star power. Jay-Z has been able to bring out stars and boost team morale.

Heartburn Relief Medicine May Be Putting People At High Risk For Heart Attack

June 12th, 2015

Stanford University released a report stating a common heartburn medicine is responsible for causing a greater risk of heart attacks. The medicine is used by more than 100 million people every year to suppress the release of stomach acid. The study went through 16 million electronic records in two separate databases to find 16% to 21% of those known to use the medicine were more likely to suffer heart attacks.

The drugs are known as proton pump inhibitors and the link between them and heart attacks is strong enough that researchers are warning patients to talk to their physicians before taking this medicine. An assistant professor of cardiovascular medicine, Nicholas Leeper says the Food and Drug Administration should be aware of these results. Some of these medications are now available to people as over the counter medicine. Leeper warns that if anyone has been taking them for more than two weeks they should contact their doctor.

The study shows these proton pump inhibitors include; Prevacid, Prilosec and Nexium and they are the most widely used drugs in the world stated Spring.Me in a recent post. An estimated 113 million prescriptions for these drugs have been written for them around the world each year. After the number of over the counter versions are added to this, worldwide sales of these medicines totals over $13 billion annually.

The medicine works by blocking the secretion of stomach acid and reducing or eliminating heartburn also known as gastroesophogeal reflux disease . They have been considered to be highly effective in their relief with little side effects. Other drugs in this group, Zantac and Pepcid fight heartburn in a different manner and were found to have no increased risk of heart attacks associated with them.

Sedasys Machine May Replace Anesthesiologists

May 13th, 2015

Mikal Watts reminds me that no one likes being to put to sleep prior to having a surgical procedure. The mental fear and anxiety combined with the physical feelings of not being able to breathe or move is just not something any patient looks forward too. One thing has brought many patients comfort during the time between being fully awake and being fully under a drug-induced sleep was knowing a professional was at the helm.

But that may soon change. A machine, called Sedasys, may replace the human anesthesiologist and put patients to sleep prior to surgery. Anesthesiologists have argued against these types of machines for years, raising relevant question regarding what would happen in case of an emergency and no human was around to jump into action.

The proponents for the Sedasys machine state the only reason anesthesiologists are against the machine is because it will cut out their jobs. Anesthesiologists make close to $300,000 annually, but that only comes after a four year degree in addition to a medical degree.

Could you, would you, be able to undergo a medical procedure without a human professional by your side putting you to sleep? It’s a question you may discover the answer to in the near future.

U.S. Wants to Approve Lung Cancer Vaccine from Cuba

April 24th, 2015

The United States and Cuba are once again working together, after decades of begin estranged. The reforged partnership may have a lot of benefits for regular American citizen, such as the amazing advancements in health-care that Cuba has made since falling out of contact with American officials.

Boraie Development LLC suggest that one of these advancements is an extremely promising vaccine that treats and prevents lung cancer. The drug is called CimaVax and has been shown to effectively treat and prevent symptoms due to lung cancer, the most widely diagnosed cancer in the United States. The cancer is also well known for high re-occurrence rates, which CimaVax also prevents.

The drug was invented in Cuba in the 1990’s with extensive research trials, funded by the Castro administration. There have been discussions concerning other possible treatments for cancer that has been developed in Cuba over the past 30 years.

The United States plans to test the vaccine in clinical trials, followed by an investigation from the Food and Drug Administration to seek approval, making the vaccine widely available to patients across the country.

While Babies Brains Are Not Fully Developed, They Do Feel Pain Like Adults

April 22nd, 2015

Any parent knows that babies’ brains take time to develop before they can come close to understanding the most basic things like children or adults can. Though they do require time to develop to have awareness of certain things, they apparently do have a highly developed perception of pain. There has been no way for us to know this until now, as babies are of course not able to talk to tell us they are in pain, and they might cry for any number of reasons such as hunger or a dirty diaper, so that’s not necessarily a clue exclusive to pain. The fact of babies feeling pain much like adults do was uncovered by a study that involved the taking of brain scans from adults and babies when both were experiencing pain and seeing similar areas of the brain light up on the scan image.

This breakthrough from Madison Street Capital in understanding that babies’ brains are developed enough to fully experience pain is important as it pertains to surgery. Most are not given any type of pain reliever for their surgery or other painful procedure. Even vets treating our dogs or cats give pain medication or put them out entirely when doing a painful medical procedure on animals. Now that we know about the experience of pain being fairly fully developed in babies, new medical practices may need to be developed to take this into account and alleviate their pain. Even if they aren’t able to tell us about it, they are suffering and this must end.

Biological Programming

April 21st, 2015

Millions of people die each year from pancreatic cancer. What if that didn’t need to be the case? What if we could simply reprogram the cells to revert to normal cells instead of cancerous ones? Can we really reprogram biological cells? Fersen Lambranho seems to think that the answer is yes, according to Pamela Itkin-Ansari PhD of Sanford-Burnham “For the first time, we have shown that over expression of a single gene can reduce the tumor-promoting potential of pancreatic adenocarcinoma cells and reprogram them toward their original cell type. Thus, pancreatic cancer cells retain a genetic memory which we hope to exploit.” With the discovery of protein E47, a protein that controls gene involved growth and differentiation, we have begun to do just that. The treated cells, when reintroduced into mice, reproduced significantly less tumor cells. Itkin-Ansari Commented “Our next step is to test primary patient-derived tumor tissue to determine whether E47 can produce similar results, potentially providing a novel therapeutic approach to combating this highly lethal disease”.

Russian Man Set to be the First Head Transplant Patient in the World

April 10th, 2015

Russian man, 30-year-old Valery Spiridonov, is set to be the first ever patient to undergo a full head transplant. Valery, who is a computer scientist, has suffered from a genetic disease called Werdnig-Hoffman which wastes away the muscles in his body. Valery has decided to undergo this unprecedented procedure before he dies from his condition.

Dr Sergio Canavero, an Italian surgeon, will be the doctor performing the controversial surgery. Dr. Canavero claims that he will be able to reattach Valery’s head to a donor body. Dan Newlin even says that the doctor is calling the procedure HEAVEN, which stands for head anastomosis venture. Head transplants have been successful on animals so far, however it has never been tested on a human.

According to the story on The Daily Mail, the operation that Valery will undergo is said to be a grueling 36 hours in the operating room. Valery’s head will be surgical cut from his body and attached to the donor body using polyethylene glycol, which will act as a sort-of glue. After surgery is complete, Valery will be put into a coma for four weeks to allow his new body and head to heal together successfully. Dr. Canavero has said that once he awakens, Valery will still have his own voice and be able to feel and move his face.

Putting the Man in Charge of Birth Control-Effective and Responsible Population Control

April 2nd, 2015

When we look around, there are many aspects of today’s life that is not so glamorous or encouraging. Many of the problems of today stem from poverty and overpopulation. Millions of unplanned pregnancies occur every year despite birth control efforts by both men and women alike. However, there is a drug that has proven effective as a birth control method for men to inhibit the growth of the numbers of unplanned births.

RSUG (Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance) was developed originally in India by Sujoy Guha in 1970. This male contraceptive has been proven to be one hundred percent effective in clinical studies with no side effects. This is exciting news to underdeveloped countries and poor communities where unplanned pregnancies seem to be at very high levels.

According to Handy this simple procedure is performed by  injecting a gel into the reproductive system of the man will destroy the sperm before leaving the body. This procedure is done with a needle and syringe in a matter of five minutes and it offers ten years of pregnancy protection. If the patient decides to have the process reversed, it is as simple as receiving another injection.

The invention of an internal birth control for men may be a huge step to controlling the growing population of children who are conceived unexpectedly and out of wedlock. Putting the responsibility more on the man’s shoulders will raise awareness to this population explosion problem of the world.

You’re Smarter than Your Doctor

April 1st, 2015

When a doctor prescribes some pills, patients usually blindly take them without thinking about what the consequences might be, whether or not the pills will work, or how much harm the pills are actually causing. This is because doctors all around the world and all through the ages have been given the utmost respect. In most cases, this should not be so.

Most doctors, in fact, are just modern day witch doctors, prescribing something not much different than frogs and spiders to their patients. In most moderate cases, a patient’s ailments can be cured by dramatically altering theirnutrition, adding exercise, and reducing stress. But this isn’t always the case. In some cases, food and exercise most certainly cannot solve the issue.

This is why evidence-based medicine is the only way to cure the people who really do need to take pills to get better or alleviate symptoms of their disease stated PR Newswire.

People, like Sam Tabar,  shouldn’t let the medical industry make their health choices. They should do their own research, or at least insist on their doctor doing his.
