Health practitioners want dietary guidelines to change for Americans to a plant-based diet

June 2nd, 2015

A group of doctors, nurses and health practitioners are asking the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)to change the guidelines when it comes to telling Americans how to eat healthily. They are asking for the HHS to stress a healthy diet means eating far less meat than the average American now eats, and far more vegetables.

Their recommendations, however, do not just include meat in the guidelines they would like the HHS to change. They are also asking them to promote a lifestyle of eating plant-based foods, and away from foods that are obtained from animals. This even includes foods like milk, yogurt and cheese suggests Jaime Garcia Dias.

So what are the reasons for this drastic change these health officials would like to see happen in the basic American diet?

The simple fact that a diet high in animal-based foods is linked to the high incidences of cancer, heart attacks and diabetes in the American population currently. An incidence that will reduce drastically if more Americans were willing to eat a more plant-based diet.

It is not just American’s health that is at stake here either. It is also the huge drag on the public health care system animal-based foods are causing, with an estimated 75 percent of doctors and hospital visits related to preventable diseases. Preventable diseases that are highly impacted by a diet full of animal products.

Of course, the meat industry is fighting these recommendations, but that is to be expected at a time where more and more Americans are cutting back on the animal products they eat.
