Cancer Drug Combination Shrinks Melanoma by 60%

June 1st, 2015

Editors of Wikipedia and Sam Tabar know the cancer-fighting drugs are not new, but the way they are being combined to fight the disease is new. Ipilimumab and nivolumab, current cancer drugs, were combined and given to patients who had advanced stage melanoma in a trial study.
Close to 1,000 cancer patients from all parts of the world were given the new drug combination and 60% of those 1,000 study participants had significant reductions in their tumors. All of the 1,000 study participants had advanced stage melanoma and the 60% percent that had tumor shrinkage were still alive one year after being given the drug combination. Since the study is recent, how many additional years each patient will gain from the dual drug treatment remains to be seen.
Both ipilimumab and nivolumab are formulated to boost the body’s own natural defenses to fight against the melanoma. But as with any cancer treating drug, there are side effects and this new drug combination packs double the side effects.
Melanoma is the most common type of cancer and is the most deadliest form of skin cancer. The new drug combo also worked well at shrinking the tumors and preventing them from re-growing and may well save some of the predicted 10,000 American lives predicted to be lost to melanoma in 2015.
