Integrity Breaches by Global Tel Link highlighted by Securus

August 3rd, 2016

The various wrongdoings by GTL will be highlighted by Securus, a leader in the provision of technology solutions used in civil and criminal justice for investigation, monitoring, corrections and public safety. Securus will highlight these breaches via press releases of a number of facts, articles and findings on the wrongdoings of GTL. I read that Securus will be reviewing a number of the systematic and potential breaches by GTL over the course of the next six months with an aim of shaming GTL to act with more integrity in future.

GTL, as I read from the article, was found to have programmed their clocks at the correctional institutions telephones and thereby added about 15 or 36 seconds to each call which was unlawful and unauthorized. The company also programmed the telephones it owns to rate the calls made using them at higher rates than the permitted ones under its tariffs and even the PSC rate caps. GTL also inflated the charges customers had to pay for their calls even after such calls had been rated. I also noticed that GTL had also billed a single call for more than just the required single time through double billing. In conclusion, I realized that GTL had overcharged the taxpayers of Louisiana by $1,243,000. The PSC Order detailing these malpractices was from way back in January 21, 1998 showing that GTL continued practicing their wrongdoings for all that time. The CEO Securus Technologies, Richard A. Smith, stated that customers in the industry expected companies to practice a higher integrity level when providing services to them.
