D-Remission?

I wanted to cover this topic because it brings plenty of confusion to most diabetics and non diabetics.

There is no cure for diabetes.

I repeat there is no cure for diabetes.  There are medical professionals as well as other people that have made claims of REVERSING or curing diabetes.  These claims are grossly unfounded and do not have any of the proper documentation to support their claims. Proper documentation would be medical studies done by a well established institute of higher learning or laboratory.  Claims of cures and such should go under pier review and testing to confirm the results.

I don’t like the term REVERSING DIABETES.  The term is completely inappropriate to use. This term gives a false sense of hope that diabetes can be cured by just doing a certain action(s).  What is not publicized is by the time a person is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes they have all ready lost 50% or more pancreatic function.  The pancreas is not an organ that can regenerate itself.

REVERSING DIABETES should mean that every diabetic has the ability to revert back to the way they were before becoming diabetic.  This is impossible.  The heart damage, the kidney damage, clogged arteries, eye damage, nerve damage will have to be REVERSED.  Any healthcare professional will tell you this is not possible.  Just eating the right foods and loosing weight does not cure anybody or change the current diabetic status of their body.  However it can reduce the the diabetic symptoms.  The pancreas will still only be working at less than 100 %.  There is no doctor or person that can make these claims or prove this will happen.  Even if a person had their blood glucose levels under control the previous damage to the body is still be there.

Beware of Charlatans!

There are people that constantly try to encourage diabetics to purchase their supplements, medicines, diabetic supplies or their diet plan stating it will REVERSE your diabetes and cure you.  If you should have one of these encounters whether it is at an health expo, via the internet, facebook or twitter…..ask them for proof of their claims.  If they can not offer you verifiable proof in the form of written and published studies with a known established institution (ie. Stanford University, UCLA, ADA etc…) then leave them alone.  Ask them if their claims are accepted by any part of the scientific community then go and check out there claims with that agency.  Most of these people are no better than snake oil salesman of the 1800′s trying to make a buck off of people that are scared about their situation.  Don’t be scared… EDUCATE YOURSELF.  If all else fails go to one of the many diabetic community sites and ask a question about the merchandise.  Diabetics will always give you an honest opinion or a resource to go to.  Then there is your own medical professional that can give you an opinion too!!!

REMISSION!

It is totally possible to put your Type 2 diabetes in REMISSION.  You are still diabetic. That will never change.  The difference is the diabetic symptoms are relaxed and are under control.  If you go back to your old habits of eating carbohydrates and sugary foods the symptoms will reappear again.

There are 2 ways that can put diabetes into REMISSION. One way is by controlling diet and watching your blood glucose levels, exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  It means you have done a fantastic job of being in control of your diabetes condition to point where you are not showing any symptoms.  This is awesome and you deserve a big, big hug. CONGRATULATIONS!!   You and your doctor can decided what the next course of action will be.  If you having difficulty with developing a food plan then contact a dietitian and perhaps see a physical trainer for exercise tips.  However, if you go back to some of your old habits of eating and not maintaining a diet plan your symptoms will return.

The second way is through any of the stomach alteration surgeries.  Gastric bypass surgery appears to lead to better long-term results including greater weight loss, resolution of diabetes and improved quality of life compared with sleeve gastrectomy and “lap-band” surgery.  I am not advocating surgery but I feel it is appropriate to mention.  As with any surgery, do your homework and check out the physician or agencies that may perform surgery.  Check to see if the doctor or group has any lawsuits or complaints about their services.

Most places have a seminars for interested people. There are testimonials on YouTube from people who have had the some form of stomach alteration.  Write them and ask about their experience.  I will suggest don’t let surgery be your first option to putting your diabetes in REMISSION.   I have found that diabetes has allowed me to learn more about myself as a person and how to once again  overcome another obstacle in life.  What is life with out its obstacles?
