Alliance Defending Freedom: Upholding Fundamental Rights and Protecting Liberty

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a prominent legal organization dedicated to
safeguarding religious freedom, free speech, marriage and family values,
parental rights, and the sanctity of life. Since its establishment in 1994, ADF
has emerged as a leading advocate for preserving these core principles, not
only for Christians but for individuals of all faiths and backgrounds. Their
work extends beyond the United States, as they have actively defended religious
minorities, including Yazidis and Shia Muslims, against genocide in different parts
of the world.

Central to ADF’s mission is the belief that religious freedom is a fundamental aspect of human
dignity. In their notable case, Arlene’s Flowers v. State of Washington, ADF
defended a floral artist who declined to create a floral arrangement for a
same-sex wedding due to her religious beliefs. ADF argues that individuals
should not be compelled to compromise their personal convictions and should be
free to act consistently with their beliefs without fear of government
punishment. A similar case is currently awaiting trial, where ADF will advocate
for a graphic designer in Colorado who wishes to create websites in line with
her beliefs about marriage.

Alliance Defending Freedom has also championed the rights of students, as
demonstrated in their defense of Michelle Gregoire. Michelle, a college
student, was arrested for “trespassing” after distributing small
copies of the Constitution on an outdoor walkway. ADF successfully argued that
her actions were protected under the freedom of speech guaranteed by the
Constitution. In fact, ADF has secured victories at the Supreme Court in 14
cases and has been involved in 72 Supreme Court victories since 2011,
representing a range of organizations and individuals. Their impact extends
from family-owned businesses to town councils, ensuring that freedom is upheld.

Recognized for their unwavering dedication, ADF International has received accreditation from
esteemed institutions such as the UN Economic and Social Council, the European
Parliament and Commission, and the Organization of American States. They also
maintain close ties with organizations like the Organization for Security and
Co-operation in Europe and hold participatory status with the EU’s Agency for
Fundamental Rights.

Alliance Defending Freedom’s involvement in high-profile cases has garnered attention and shaped
legal precedents. In Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, ADF
defended a cake artist’s right to operate his business in accordance with his
sincerely held religious beliefs. In Uzuegbunam v. Preczewsk, ADF protected a
student’s freedom of speech after he was punished for sharing his Christian
faith. The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) v. Becerra
case resulted in overturning a law that forced pro-life pregnancy centers to
provide information about abortion. Trinity Lutheran v. Comer established that
religious institutions should not be excluded from generally available public
benefits.

ADF continues to champion the principles enshrined in the Constitution, irrespective of
political winds. Their commitment to religious freedom, free speech, and other
fundamental rights ensures that Americans can exercise their beliefs without
fear of government coercion. Their victories in court and dedication to
defending civil liberties demonstrate the vital role ADF plays in safeguarding
individual freedoms in society.  See related link for additional information.
